Digital Cocoon - 2020

The installation ‘Digital Cocoon’ invites viewers into a dark space, where the skin-like textile structures float in the middle of the room, floodlit by digitally projected images of leaves. The fabric seems to absorb the projected light, and bounces it off the walls, in an intricate play of shadows and lights.

The collaborative project of Ekaterina Adelskaya and Liubov Kalashnikova ‘digital cocoon’ reflects on the namesake social trend, whereby individuals retreat from physical social interaction, isolating themselves, immersed in a world made up exclusively of digital interactions.

Drawing from the natural process of metamorphosis, the artists show the flip-side in digital cocooning, where human existence is reversed, from a butterfly, back to a state of isolated larvae-like immobility.
